When to go and where to go?

By: andyman3000, about 1 year

When I last talked to Ronny we thought of something between May and July, maybe later. We haven't decided where to go or when to go exactly so this is where everyone that is interested in this can make suggestions.

Hello! Andy, nice idea! :D So, I'm moving back to Perth in four weeks to begin a PhD at ECU!!! Anja will be joining me shortly thereafter! Maybe we can hae a re-union in Perth? It looks like I'll have a break from my research in early July. I dreamt about funneling beers in the village the other night!

That would be great. Unfortunately I think most people wont be able to make it to Oz. Lets figure out who is interested in this whole thing and then discuss the final destination. I really liked the idea of triangulating the place we can meet at.

Ohhh having it here would be wicked...haha Mel and I could definately come. We both start full time teaching jobs this year, so we are gonna be kinda more hectic than normal. We do get a break mid year. I'll find out exact dates soon. If we have school we definately can't come. Might be pushing it even if it is over our break, cos 2 grand on flights might not be worth it for just two weeks. Mmm but we will have to wait n see with that one.

I think Australia is the most expensive flight for everyone. Well except for us. Anywhere cheap and fun would be great.

Nate give me or Lars a buzz when you get here so we can have some adventures (my no' is 0410665750)

I evaluated some destinations and their pros and cons:

    1. Spain
Pros: Cheap flights from all around Europe. Good weather. Good for partying.

    Cons:
    Far for the Ozzies.

    2. Bali
    Pros: Cheap accomodation, good weather

Cons: Far for the Europeans and Americans

    3. Thailand
Pros: Pretty much the same distance for everyone. Probably almost same cost and distance for everyone.

Cons: Fairly expensive for everyone, pretty far for most of us.

    4. Norway:
Pros: Cheap to get there for ~70% of our potential participants

Cons: Too expensive for the rest of the crowd

I bet there are more good potential places to meet up. Please make suggestions here and comment, which ones you prefer or what you think about these destinations.

Hey good job summing up there Andy..mmm Thailand is prob the best in my book. But that's cos Thailand generally works out pretty cheap for us! If I can afford to do it i'll go anywhere. Spain would be really really cool I think.

Hey Andy, great idea. I'll be back in Oz later this year until then, I'm up for Norway or even Amsterdam.

     Cheers

I am also planning on visit Oz sometime this year. Would be awesome to meet up with some of you somewhere along the way.  Btw. the Norwegians are having an Australia Day celebration in Oslo the 26, so if any of you are in the neighbourhood give us a shout and I’ll give you the details!

I’m also voting for a reunion either in Thailand (cheep, fun, sun) the typical destination for a holiday for all Europeans, Asians and Aussies. Or back to the basics: Perth. Got to love it!
    (nice smilies Andy..hehe)

Dang.  Sounds like a blast, and I'd love to meet up with everyone... those are all awfully long trips from Vancouver, though, I gotta admit.  I was in Oz and Europe last year, so I won't get my hopes too up, but that would be such a blast.  Thanks for the setup Andy - it's cool being in touch with you guys again.

;( had to take this chance to be emo)

What a great idea! I will be in Oz shortly, therefore Thailand would be the best I think...except for Perth of course. I don't know if I can afford the reuinion trip this year though, because I am just about to move to OZ with Nathan...which already means high expenses for this year.

Why not plan a reunion for 2009? That would be than a round 5 year anniversary. Would fit much better for me, if it is next year...

Seems like the majority favours Thailand so far.
But maybe youre right about the timing, Anja. I'm open for having it next year as well to make it a 5-year-aniversary. What do you guys think?

Am I still the only one from the Americas on here?  Yeah, next year might be better for me too - I'm hoping to be in Israel this summer sometime, so I don't know if I can make two trips in one summer.  I hate to put it off, but a year from now might work better for me too.  I hope.
